Liability
Injury or damage your pet causes to others, at home or out and about.
Your dog or cat is family. Pet insurance protects you if they damage someone else’s property or hurt someone, and helps with vet bills when they need it most.
Pet insurance
Pet insurance has two main parts. The first is liability: if your dog bites someone, breaks something or causes an accident, the insurance pays for the damage caused to others.
The second is vet cover: consultations, vaccines, tests, surgery or hospital stays, either reimbursed or through a network of partner clinics.
For dogs classed as potentially dangerous, liability insurance has been compulsory for years, and Spain’s animal welfare rules have been extending this to dogs in general. I’ll explain what the law requires in your case and what is simply recommended.

Vet care after an accident, including surgery and hospital stays.
Diagnosis and treatment of illness, depending on the plan.

Costs of searching and advertising, and in some cases compensation.

Exact cover, limits and conditions depend on each insurer and policy. I’ll explain them before you sign.

Illustrative examples of how this insurance works day to day.
Your dog gets scared, pulls on the lead and knocks someone over. Liability cover pays for the damage and your defence if there’s a claim.
Your cat swallows an object and needs emergency surgery. Accident cover reimburses much of the vet bill.
When adopting a dog classed as potentially dangerous, liability insurance is one of the requirements for the licence.
Many insurers have a maximum age for taking out a policy. The earlier, the better.
Anything diagnosed before the policy starts is usually not covered.
