Insurance for the self-employed and small businesses: protect what you’ve built.

When you work for yourself or run a small business, one setback can stop your income overnight. I’ll help you identify the risks that matter in your line of work and cover them without overpaying.

Self-employed & small business insurance

What is it?

Every business is different. A physiotherapist, a shop, a designer working from home and a company with staff don’t need the same things. So we start by understanding your work, not with a product list.

Some insurance protects you against claims from clients, some looks after your premises and equipment, and some protects you as a person: if you fall ill or have an accident, who pays your bills while you can’t work?

In some professions certain insurance is also mandatory. I’ll explain which ones apply to you.

The most important cover

General liability

Damage your business causes to clients, suppliers or any third party.

Professional indemnity

Errors, omissions or negligence in your work that cause a client financial loss. Mandatory in several professions.

Shop or office insurance

Your premises, furniture, equipment and stock against fire, water, theft and other damage.

Sick-pay insurance

A daily amount if you can’t work due to illness or accident, on top of the public benefit.

Accident cover

Compensation for disability or death caused by an accident.

Health for you and your team

Private medical insurance for you or group cover for employees.

Cyber risk

Cyber attacks, data loss and their legal and financial consequences.

Exact cover, limits and conditions depend on each insurer and policy. I’ll explain them before you sign.

Depending on your business

Start here

Self-employed professional

Professional indemnity, sick pay and health. The foundation for consultants, healthcare workers, creatives and technicians.

Retail and hospitality

Premises insurance, liability and loss of income if a claim forces you to close.

Small business with staff

Group health and life, collective-agreement cover, directors’ liability and cyber risk.

Business vehicles

Vans and fleets with cover adapted to professional use.

Real-life examples

Illustrative examples of how this insurance works day to day.

01

The mistake that cost a client

A consultant delivers a report with an error and the client claims a financial loss. Professional indemnity pays the compensation and the defence.

02

A flood at the premises

A café floods and has to close for several weeks. The premises policy repairs the damage and loss-of-income cover replaces part of the lost revenue.

03

Off work with an injury

A designer breaks her wrist and can’t work for a month. Her sick-pay insurance pays a daily amount on top of the public benefit.

It’s for you if…

  • You’re registered as self-employed (autónomo) or just starting out.
  • You have premises, a shop or an office.
  • You work with clients who could claim against you for a mistake.
  • You have employees and want to look after them and meet your obligations.

Before you sign, check this

  1. 01

    Declared activity

The policy must describe exactly what you do. If your activity isn’t listed, a claim could be excluded.

  2. 02

    Sums insured

Match the limits to the real size of your projects and clients. A low limit can fall short.

  3. 03

    Territorial scope

If you work with clients abroad, check the policy covers you outside Spain too.

  4. 04

    Tax

Many business-related insurance premiums can be a deductible expense. Check with your accountant too.

Frequently asked questions

Which insurance is mandatory for the self-employed?

It depends on your activity. Many regulated professions require professional indemnity insurance. We’ll review it based on what you do.

Do I need insurance if I work from home?

Home insurance usually doesn’t cover professional activity. Professional indemnity and sick-pay cover can be very important.

Does sick-pay insurance replace the Social Security benefit?

No, it complements it, helping you keep your income while the public benefit covers only part of it.

Can you review the insurance I already have?

Of course. A review often finds duplicated cover or important gaps.
